This painting encompasses the Ancient Egyptian belief in the phoenix as a symbol of fertility and rebirth. The left side features ‘re-birth’ through water – the sacred Nile River, believed to have brought the watery chaos of existence to the Egyptians, as well as water on Mars, which was discovered during the time I was painting. The right side illustrates ‘fertility’ through the roots and branches of a tree (Egyptians also considered the phoenix as a manifestation of the resurrected Osiris, which was often shown perched on a tree). The center holds the phoenix rising from flames, an egg, DNA strand, infinity symbol, scarab, an hour glass, and a butterfly, all of which are symbols of re-birth, protection, fertility and transformation.
