I had the privilege of watching these beautiful wooden masks being carved in front of me while visiting the Boruca tribe in Costa Rica in 2019. This is my own twist on a Boruca mask, which is carved from wood, painted with vibrant colors, and features psychedelic animals and dualistic, contorted facial expressions.
Boruca masks originated during the Spanish Conquest and were worn by the Borucan people with the intent to scare the unwelcome invaders back to Spain. Despite being insanely outnumbered, they were victorious; keeping their land and their traditions. These masks have been a symbol of pride and victory for Costa Rica for hundreds of years.
Forever inspired.
